N°1 de Chanel: A New Direction rooted in Science and Sustainability
Chanel forges a new way forward in the realm of beauty with the new N° 1 de Chanel line by incorporating clean and sustainable plant resources into developing skincare attuned to our needs.
Inspired by nature’s resilience and beauty, Chanel Research looks into the remarkable properties of a red camellia flower extract from ‘The Czar’ variety of Camellia japonica. This delicate flower with evergreen leaves, has blooms in winter and petals that remain unaffected by neither water nor the cold. Concentrated protocatechuic acid is found at the heart of its petals. To fully harness the power of the camellia to protect skin vitality by addressing the first stage of skin ageing, Chanel established its camellia fields and research laboratory in Gaujacq, chosen for its microclimate along with its fertile and balanced soil.
Close to a decade’s worth of experiments done with researchers from the Department of Biotechnology and Ageing at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, has revealed a key mechanism involved in cellular vitality called senescence that provides previously unseen perspectives in addressing the signs of skin ageing. Chanel’s in-house experts accessed models that reproduced the different stages of senescence for the first time and tested the effectiveness of the most promising ingredients. The red camellia extract produced exceptional results at the first stage; it supports skin vitality, enabling skin to look healthy for a longer time while protecting skin from the consequences of stress with its rich antioxidants. And this led to the creation of N° 1 de Chanel, a new generation of anti-ageing skincare.
Revitalise, Smooth and Refresh with N°1 de Chanel skincare
Formulated with 95% ingredients of natural origin, 76% of which comes from the camellia, the Red Camellia Revitalising Serum has a transparent gel texture that is easily absorbed and promises to prevent and correct the five signs of ageing – wrinkles, pores, radiance, elasticity and comfort. To optimise the effects of the Revitalizing Serum, Chanel has developed a specific application technique that increases radiance by acting on vascularization and therefore, skin oxygenation:
- Do a pinch and twist movement using the thumb and index finger
- Move outwards along the jaw, then gradually moving up from the corner of the lips to the ears
- Lastly, perform the movement from the nose out across the cheekbones
The Red Camellia Revitalizing Cream is also concentrated in red camellia extract and oil. The whipped formula visibly smooths the look of lines upon application, while adding comfort and radiance as it protects the skin against urban pollution. Designed to be applied after the serum, and using the smoothing technique:
- Apply the cream with the palms of your hands with long, outward movements from the jaw to the ear, from the nose to the ear, and then from the forehead to the temple, and lastly, from the ear to the neck
- Repeat the same movements on the other side of the face
Reduce dark shadows and puffiness, while smoothening the eye area with the Red Camellia Revitalizing Eye Cream that is also powered by the red camellia extract. The pearlescent white cream also contains plant-origin squalene and hyaluronic acid to hydrate, refresh and illuminate the eyes. Optimise the benefits of the eye cream with the eye beauty massage technique:
- Apply the cream using the fingertips across the upper eyelid from the inner corner outwards. Repeat 3 times.
- Then smooth the crow’s feet area and repeat 3 times.
- Finish by carrying out the same smoothing movements under the eye, starting at the outer corner, then in the middle of the eye, and lastly, the inner corner, smoothing outwards each time.
The N° 1 de Chanel skincare range also includes the Red Camellia Powder-To-Foam Cleanser with an ultrafine powder texture that is enriched with red camellia oil, and transforms into a soft, light foam upon contact with water to remove skin impurities and pollution residue, the fresh and transparent Red Camellia Revitalizing Lotion highly concentrated in camellia water that tightens pores and improves elasticity, and the Red Camellia Revitalizing Serum-In-Mist with a bi-phase formula that contains the same concentrated amount of red camellia extract as the Revitalizing Serum. Spray in on the face throughout the day to protect the skin from pollution, enhance radiance in the complexion and revive makeup.

The Red Camellia Revitalizing Foundation is a long-wear formula with buildable coverage that evens out skin tone and correct imperfections. Enriched with red camellia oil and hydrating agents, it’s made up of 94% ingredients of natural origin, protecting the epidermis from external aggressors while preserving a youthful appearance.
Also enriched with red camellia oil and plant origin wax, the Red Camellia Revitalizing Lip And Cheek Balm is a creamy, coloured, multi-use balm that can be applied to lips and cheeks with the fingertips to enhance their natural shade. It is smooth, non-oily and available in 6 shades.
Refresh and Revive with N°1 de Chanel fragrance
Rounding up the new series is a fragrance mist that perfumes, refreshes and revives. Designed to be worn alone or with your usual perfume, the L’eau Rouge Revitalizing Fragrance Mist comprises a skincare base enriched with refreshing camellia water along with a revitalizing red camellia extract as the medium. Created by Olivier Polge, in collaboration with the Chanel Fragrance Laboratory, this is an original floral bouquet since the red camellia is odourless to begin with. To reflect both the softness and energy of the flower, he played with contrasts, opting for generous floral notes and a heart evoking the round, sensual camellia flower, “I started out with a multitude of jasmine, orange blossom and rose floral facets typical of the House, and then I combined them with sparkling red fruit notes to express the freshness of this fragrance mist.”
