YSL Beauty: Hello, Sexy Tomboy

by Li Yuling

Bold is beautiful. We bring you behind the scenes to show you how we played with this season’s exciting Fall colours from YSL Beauty.

Fashion and beauty maestro Monsieur Yves Saint Laurent famously said, “The most beautiful makeup for a woman is passion. But cosmetics are easier to buy.”

Today, YSL Beauty’s cosmetics are loved by women and makeup professionals alike – and for good reason: their products are simply among the best in innovation, performance, and wearability. Think exceptional colour pay-offs, flattering finishes, comfortable textures, and effortless application.

The woman who wears YSL Beauty is chic, confident, and passionate, unafraid to express her individuality in full colour. Her face is her canvas, and she knows exactly how to accentuate her beauty.

This season, YSL Beauty invites every woman to embrace her inner tomboy and siren. Using key products from their gorgeous Fall 2019 collection, makeup guru Peter Khor has created an unreservedly bold look that is equal parts feminine and edgy. We got him to dish out his best tips so you, too, can rock those colours.

The Face

Skin that looks naturally perfect from every angle.

The products: All Hours Concealer, All Hours Cushion Foundation, All Hours Setting Powder

Why we love them: This trio is all you need to create a flawless complexion. Sweat, heat and transfer-resistant, the All Hours Concealer erases blemishes without dragging on skin. The new All Hours Cushion Foundation offers everything we desire in a foundation – buildable coverage, easy application, shades that stay true, a dewy-matte finish, and UV protection (SPF50+). Even Peter can’t stop raving about its velvety texture and “second-skin feel”. For on-the-go touch-ups, the uber fine All Hours Setting Powder gives skin a lasting, shine-free yet non-drying finish.

Get the look: Moisturise skin well before applying concealer. “This is especially important for the area under the eyes which tends to dry out. Also, I like to use a brush to apply concealer as it helps to smoothen out the canvas.” Apply the cushion foundation after (not before) putting on eye makeup – this lets you ‘clean’ up stray traces of eye shadow on the face without loading on excess product. Dab the setting powder where needed, such as the T-zone. “What you want to create is a semi-matte finish, which looks more natural,” says Peter.

Pro tip: Make your eye shadow palette go the extra mile by using the rose gold shade as highlights on the cheekbone and the mid-brown shade for contouring below the cheekbone and along the jawline.

The Eyes

Sultry smokey eyes with rose gold highlights and hints of burgundy.

“Many women will buy a palette but use only one or two shades. With a little daring and creativity, you can use more shades. Here, I’ve created a softer smokey eye look by adding touches of gold and burgundy, which complement the earthy brown tones.”

The product: YSL Beaute Sexy Tomboy Eye Palette Collector

Why we love it: Nude shadows may have a rep for being safe and boring, which the YSL Beauty Sexy Tomboy Eye Palette Collector is anything but. Inspired by YSL Global Beauty Director Tom Pecheaux’s signature twisted nude look, this palette combines nuanced neutrals (ultra wearable light beige plus mid and dark browns) and unconventional brights (glittering rose gold and audacious burgundy) in different finishes, from matte to shimmery.

Get the look: Sweep the darker shades over the upper eyelid before blending the lighter shades in to create highlights and depth. On the upper eyelid, use long, steady strokes. Don’t be afraid to use a firmer hand when applying shadow on the lower rim. “This creates a harder line and an edgier vibe,” says Peter. For a more multidimensional look, dust some rose gold shadow below the brow and along the lower lash line.

Pro tip: “Shading your eyelid with a brown kohl pencil before applying eyeshadow will not only intensify the colours, but also make the makeup last longer,” adds Peter.

The Lips

Power lips in a striking shade of plum.

The product: Tatouage Couture No.30 Outrageous Red

Why we love it: There’s nothing more seductive than a sumptuous red pout. Tatouage Couture delivers intense colour without dehydrating our precious kissers, and the matte finish adds to the glamour and mystery of the crimson hue.

Get the look: Layer it on to build coverage and intensity.

Pro tip: Thanks to the brilliant design of Tatouage Couture’s bevelled applicator, painting your Cupid’s bow with precision will be a breeze. However, if you’d like more definition, you can pre-shade your lips with a pencil, but that is totally optional.
