Moynat x Mark Hearld: Where Art Meets Craftsmanship

by Pressroom

The charming flora and fauna of the English countryside interpreted by artist Mark Hearld come alive in Moynat’s festive collection.

Art meets craftsmanship in Moynat’s Christmas lineup. Nature takes centrestage in a collection of limited-edition bags and small leather goods as birds soar across limitless skies, perch calmly on branches and dance exultantly among trees. In this special collaboration between Moynat’s creative director Nicholas Knightly and Friend of the House Mark Hearld, the endless wonder and ineffable beauty of the natural world is expressed beautifully.

Hailing from York, Mark Hearld works across collage, painting and printmaking as well as ceramics, wallpaper and textile design. His paper-cut style lends itself to Maison Moynat’s masterful leather marquetry technique. Seemingly spontaneous shapes – cut from the powdery smooth Tourillon Blush leather and silky Tourillon Gex leather that the Maison is known for – connect to form enchanting scenes inspired by excerpts of the English countryside on Moynat’s Flori, Vertical Duo Tote and Zippy Wallet.

Great skill, patience and precision define the art of leather marquetry. Individual leather pieces are intricately inlaid to form a seamless motif; the artisan takes precision in the thickness of the leather, skilfully assembling them by hand. The pieces are then assembled edge to edge to form a trompe l’oeil – an illusion of a single piece of leather achieved by an incredibly complex technique. Each marquetery creation is a unique work of art and showcases the Maison’s finest savoir-faire. At the same time, every jigsaw piece is also a path to a more sustainable way to reuse the high-quality surplus of materials from Moynat’s previous collections.

The iconic Flori features marquetry, where the flap and the body of the bag form a single pattern. Priced at SGD7,800, it is crafted in supple, full grain Tourillon Blush leather, in the striking colours of Coral and Prussian Blue. Matching perfectly is the Zippy Wallet (SGD1,300) in the same two colourways.

Meanwhile, the versatile, reversible Vertical Duo Printed Tote (SGD4,600) features a pattern technique achieved by contrasted inkjet printing with a three-dimensional effect. Available in two colourways Tourterelle/Capucine and Skyblue/Lavender, this roomy workhorse is ever more enchanting with the imaginative landscape silhouetted against the Tourillon Gex leather.

Established as a trunk-maker in 1849, Moynat has cultivated a history of freedom and wonder in exceptional bags, accessories and objets d’art that celebrate artisanal craftsmanship and personalisation. This collaboration animates dreams of distant horizons and faraway lands underscored by an eclectic British spirit, with each inimitable creation illustrating the power of craft through the joy of making and the pleasure of artistic endeavours with friends.
