Pretty (and Stylish) in Pink

by Susanah Cheok

Blush out in pink’s auspicious, romantic aura – perfect for CNY and V-Day.

Don’t shy away from this sweet hue. Pink isn’t just for (little) girls. Even baby pink has no age limit; it’s a pretty choice for grownups too. I know women who avoid it for fear of looking like mutton dressed as lamb, or think they’re too cool for the hue.

I’ll tell you what’s cool. Glowing radiantly because you’ve got the right colour on, and making other people positively calm and happy at the same time. Yes, pink has all those effects. Why do you think it’s associated with laughter (tickled pink), wellness (in the pink of health), positivity (coming up roses), and looking forever young (the flush of youth), you get the idea. On a practical note, pink also cuts the sallowness from dull complexions, to bring out your skin’s inner light.

This CNY, instead of cracking your head on what colours to don, just pick pink – it’s the no-brainer colour of good luck, charm, and optimism, all year, every year. And a sure-fire romantic colour that works for V-Day too. Here’s how to do pink with womanly panache.

Date-Night & Hosting Dresses

Pink is ever so sweet, so up the fashion ante with runway-friendly numbers such as these: Ferragamo sharpens it as a suit – definitely something to stand out in on any occasion, even at work.

House of Holland’s daring ensemble is definitely more statement-making than sweet. Prada’s pinafore lets you change it up with other colours, and prints, depending on your mood and where you’re headed. And who wouldn’t melt in this glorious bubblegum confection from Valentino – never thought I’d say glorious and bubblegum in the same breath, yet there is pink in all its awesome glory.

Ace Accessories

Small items that give a dash of colour are a good way to wear pink if you’re ‘pink-hibited’. Far from cutesy, these bona fide style stars will see you through the years.

Let’s start with something bold like a Moda Operandi pink rosette headband, all the rage now to keep stray baby hair in place, or didn’t you know that a messy mane is out for now? Then ease into something practical that you need, like these sunnies from Miu Miu and Moschino. Candy cane and satin ribbons never looked so good. Miu Miu has a matching clutch to go with the sunnies.

Another low-commitment way to adopt pink if you’re a bit of a pink-phobe is with these adorable small leather accessories from Louis Vuitton. The wallet is delightful and the sling pouch simply cute. If you want something iconic, definitely grab The Pouch from Bottega Veneta. Its intricate construction is always a fashion do.

Already giving or still receiving red or pink packets? Either way, stash them in these cheerful Kate Spade bags. They’ll brighten up any outfit, even your lucky LBD.

These scarves from Hermes, all different in look and feeling, will hit the same sweet spot. Hermes Jungle Love Tattoo shawl is strong-sweet, L’Art Du Sarasa is rustic-sweet, and Bouclerie Moderne is city-chic sweet.

Can’t imagine wearing pink shoes unless they’re sexy platforms? Rethink pink with these Saint Laurent high tops from the men’s collection. It’s street yet subtle and unexpectedly feminine.

Baby doll Beauty

Certainly, beauty is where pink reigns supreme. Check out the plethora of just-in-time for CNY and V-day beauty booty.

Dior Addict Maximiser lippies come in a range of glossy pink hues, but we like Raspberry and Holo Pink the most. Dior Lip Glow To The Max Color Reviver Balm in Holo Pink and Pink offer the same pretty hues with depth and a glowing holographic effect. But to really take pink to the max, we dare you to wear Dior’s Lolli Glow Makeup on your eyes and cheeks too.

If you don’t fancy actually wearing the colour pink, how about splashing on a sparkling pink EDT from Miss Dior? For this new version of Miss Dior EDT, creator François Demachy emphasised the essential Grasse rose, by giving it a hint of freshness with a new lily of the valley accord. Rose petals intertwined with a fresh veil of lily of the valley, and zesty mandarin, make this a sweet but sexy floral whirlwind of a bouquet. Its miniature Roller-Pearl EDT are great for that new pink purse too.

Or softly does it with Chanel’s Chance Tendre Eau de Parfum. In 2019, Chanel unveils a new interpretation of the Chance Eau Tendre fragrance as an Eau de Parfum and it’s the most tender of the Chance interpretations so far. With Chance Eau Tendre Eau de Parfum, perfumer-creator Olivier Polge, in collaboration with the Chanel Laboratory of Fragrance Creation and Development, reinterprets the oral-fruity signature. It’s a rich mix of creamy white musk notes, tangy grapefruit and exotic jasmine. The juice is a blush pink, but on the signature round bottle’s gold neck is a die-shaped cap that’s cool silver.

Hera’s Sensual Tint, on the other hand, is bold and bordering on audacious. This reformulation comes with richer pigments, higher staying power, better blendability, and in a vivid colour – Sensitive Fuchsia – that feels comfortable and lightweight. Perfect for CNY feasting.

Urban Decay takes party-girl pink to the next level, with its Naked Cherry Collection of cream and metallized lipsticks. The surprisingly sweet hue named Devilish, and a 12-shade Naked Cherry Eye Shadow Palette are all sultry and ripe for the picking.

Don’t keep the pleasure of going pink to yourself. Share the bliss with loved ones. Diptyque’s pink-inspired limited edition Damascena and Centifolia candles are a calming welcome for guests who pop over for bubbly and yusheng, and utterly romantic for any V-Day cook-in. For Valentine’s Day, the Diptyque Maison is celebrating roses in all their forms in the Roses Collection, and Centifolia Rose and Damask Rose express all its facets.
