A Crossover Bag C-onversation

by Emmeline Ong

It’s not the bag that ‘wears’ the woman, but the woman who wears the bag… and makes it hers.

My first leather bag was vintage, handed down lovingly from an older friend as close to a sister as I had. It was a saddle bag in classic camel, seasoned to the touch, with an antique gold turn-lock closure. Deceptively small, it could hold all my essentials and sometimes more. It went places with me; from casual brunches and market runs, to airports, holidays, hawker centres and fancy dinners, I truly made it my own.

I wish I could say I remained loyal to one but the versatile crossbody bag had not only sealed its place in this bag-lover’s heart, it also opened me up to welcome more of its kind. How not to, when they come in all shapes and sizes, clothed in every imaginable texture, and coloured in all the shades you can think of?

And recently, even more so when it leaves my hands free, keeps essentials within reach, and stays close to my body as I weave through narrow aisles and walkways, trying to maintain a ‘safe distance’.

A bag conversation can have no boundaries. It may be difficult to rein it in when the world of bags is vast and diverse. We’ve narrowed it down to 3 C’s with a curation of 6 bags that can be worn Crossbody, each with its own Character, and featuring different types of Closure. Whether it’s utility you require, an occasion to fulfil or as an expression of your style, there’s one for (every side of) you.

Sling it as you like it, and own it.
