Vacheron Constantin’s latest Métiers d’Art collection is a vibrant celebration of the rich symbolism of ancient Chinese culture
Vacheron Constantin has unveiled its latest Métiers d’Art collection, a series of four limited-edition watches that pay homage to the rich cultural heritage of China’s last two Imperial dynasties from the 14th to the early 20th centuries. This collection, titled “Tribute to Traditional Symbols,” is a collaboration with Mr. Song, a former Associate Research Librarian from the Palace Museum in Beijing’s Forbidden City, who provided expert guidance on Chinese history and symbolism.
Central to this collection is the “Seawater Cliff” motif, a design that first emerged during the Ming dynasty and was later refined under the Qing dynasty. Traditionally reserved for the Imperial family, this motif depicts waves crashing against towering cliffs, symbolising the emperor’s steadfastness amidst life’s challenges. The motif, found on ceremonial robes and other courtly architectural elements as well as objects like furniture and porcelain, embodies themes of stability, longevity, and prosperity.
The first watch, “Eternal Flow,” is a vibrant masterpiece of cloisonné enamelling which originated in China. The technique used in this timepieces is Jingtai Blue, which pays tribute to Emperor Jingtai’s rule in the Ming Dynasty, during which the technique was popularised. Meticulously crafted using 220 gold wires to form the intricate “Seawater Cliff” design, the design is complemented by a hand-engraved bat motif on the bezel — a traditional Chinese symbol of good fortune.
The enamelling is done in successive layers according to colour and intensity, fired between each operation. A final layer of polish then highlights the gold cloisonné that gives substance to the motif, and the process is completed with a translucent enamel coating to impart glow into the composition.
The second watch, “Moonlight Slivers,” employs a mix of engraving, Grand Feu enamelling, and gem-setting to create a monochromatic interpretation of the same motif, adorned with brilliant-cut diamonds that evoke the ethereal glow of moonlight on waves.
To achieve this, the gold dial is divided into three parts: the first portrays the sea with deep blue Grand Feu enamel on which the waves are engraved to create volutes then accentuated by a thin layer of white enamel that fills in the furrows to cast a subtle shadow, creating the impression of a sea in motion; the second part defines each sea tide with hand-set brilliant-cut diamonds, evoking moon slivers; the third employs the use of engraving with tone-on-tone champlevé enamel inlays to accentuate the depth of the landscape, working the mountains in drypoint to enhance perspective.
Limited to 15 pieces for each design, every watch is housed in an 18K gold 38mm case and is powered by Vacheron Constantin’s in-house Calibre 2460 movement, known for its precision and aesthetic appeal. The intricate craftsmanship involved in creating these timepieces underscores the brand’s dedication to preserving traditional artistic techniques, such as cloisonné enamelling and engraving.
This collection not only showcases the Maison’s commitment to preserving traditional artisanal techniques but also stands as a cultural tribute, blending deep historical research with exquisite craftsmanship. Vacheron Constantin’s collaboration with Mr. Song highlights the brand’s dedication to celebrating and preserving artistic heritage, reaffirming its role as a guardian of cultural and horological artistry. The series is a vivid reminder of the powerful intersection between history, art, and watchmaking.
