IWC Schaffhausen: All Geared Up

by Pressroom

IWC goes full speed ahead with a new limited edition Ingenieur and three new Pilot’s Chronographs in celebration of its partnership with Apple Original Films’ Formula One™ racing feature film

Time is of essence on the race track, where every millisecond counts. The attention to precision engineering is crucial, whether it’s in the realm of telling time or in the world of Formula One™racing. In 2013, IWC became the Official Engineering Partner of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team, and welcomed team driver Lewis Hamilton as an IWC brand ambassador. For more than a decade now, IWC Schaffhausen’s passion for motorsports, racing and engineering is evident.

This year, a partnership with Apple Original Films’ star-studded Formula One™ racing feature film shot on real race tracks, drums up excitement not just for motorsport and film lovers, but also for watch collectors and lovers alike, with the launch of the exquisite IWC timepieces featured.

We are a brand with a long-standing connection to motorsport, so we could not miss out on the opportunity to become a part of this project. We are thrilled that the movie will be shot using race cars on real racetracks, and we cannot wait to see what an incredible experience this will be on the screen.

Ingenieur Automatic 40 (Ref. IW328908)

One of the stars announced at this year’s Watches and Wonders is a 1000-piece limited edition of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 (Ref. IW328908) with a green dial. The watch is inspired by the bespoke version of the Ingenieur SL Reference 1832 with a dial in the signature green colour of the main character Sonny Hayes, a veteran racing driver played by actor Brad Pitt.

In the spirit of the Ingenieur, this new timepiece sports the characteristic bezel secured to the case ring with five functional screws, and an ergonomic integrated bracelet with a butterfly folding clasp. Housed in a stainless steel case, the Grid”-patterned green dial with gold-plated appliques is outstanding. The gold-plated hands and metal markers are filled with Super-LumiNova® for enhanced legibility.

The IWC-manufactured 32111 calibre powering this Ingenieur Automatic 40 offers a power reserve of 120 hours and 10 bar water resistance. A soft-iron inner case effectively shields the movement against the effects of magnetic fields, following the Ingenieur tradition.

3 New Pilot’s Watch Chronographs

In celebration of the F1® movie partnership, IWC Schaffhausen also welcomes three “APXGP”-inspired chronographs to its Pilot’s Watches collection. The IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre’s bidirectional pawl winding system builds up a power reserve of 46 hours. Engineered for performance, reliability and precision, this mechanical chronograph in a classic column-wheel design accurately measures stop times of up to 12 hours. The IWC-typical vertical subdial layout places the stopped minutes directly at the 12 o’clock position, enhancing readability. The hours and minutes are displayed in two totalisers at 9 o’clock and 12 o’clock.

Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 (Ref. IW388309)

The Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 (Ref. IW388309) worn by Damson Idris’ character Joshua Pearce, is a stunning timepiece with an 18K 5N gold case, pushers and crown, paired with a black lacquered dial and a black ceramic tachymeter bezel.

A meticulously engineered production process was required to complete the lacquered black dial, with each totaliser at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock individually finished and printed. The hand-polished gold-plated appliques for the indices, numerals and characteristic triangle at 12 o’clock are fixed to the dial and filled with Super-LumiNova® for enhanced legibility. A black rubber strap with integrated EasX-CHANGE® strap change system completes the look.

Pilot’s Watch Chronograph APXGP (Ref. IW378009) & Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 APXGP (Ref. IW388116)

Dedicated to the “APXGP” team in the movie, the 43mm Pilot’s Watch Chronograph APXGP (Ref. IW378009) and the 41mm Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 APXGP (Ref. IW388116) feature stainless steel cases paired with black dials featuring white numerals and golden minute markers. The “APXGP” team logo printed in gold, features prominently through the tinted sapphire case backs.

The visual theme continues with the minute and hour hands and the hands in the subdials, all gold-plated and filled with white Super-LumiNova®. The chronographs are water resistant to 10 bar, and fitted with durable, waterproof black rubber straps featuring a special laser engraving to commemorate the “APXGP” team. Changing straps is at the touch of a button with the EasX-CHANGE® tool-less system.

Watches from IWC’s Pilot’s Watches collection will be worn by different characters in the movie, and also feature as the official team watches. Fans of IWC can also look forward to more of the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer’s presence in the movie as the sponsor of the fictional “APXGP” team, with its branding on the race cars, the driver’s race suits and helmets, the team uniforms, as well as in the garage.
