A modern remake of a living legend by A. Lange & Söhne.
Unveiled in 1994, the very year A. Lange & Söhne was refounded, the Lange 1 takes pride of place as the manufactory’s most iconic timepiece, the first in an ever-expanding family of classics. With a characteristic outsize date and asymmetric displays whose midpoints form the three corners of an isosceles triangle, every member of the Lange 1 family is instantly recognisable – the Grand Lange 1 is no exception.
2003 saw the birth of the first-generation Grand Lange 1, where the case diameter increased from (the Lange 1) 38.5 millimetres to 41.9 millimetres – making it the largest timepiece made by the Saxon watchmakers at that time.
The next milestone in the Grand Lange 1’s evolution was the introduction of its own manual wound movement, L095.01, in 2012. The mechanical watch’s aesthetic also saw further refinement that year, giving rise to a new diameter of 40.9 millimetres and case height of 8.8 millimetres.
A. Lange & Söhne’s sustained drive for excellence brings us to the 2022 iteration of the Grand Lange 1. What sets the new Grand Lange 1 apart from its predecessors are its sleeker proportions that offer the same wrist presence but more ease of wear. The case diameter measures a generous 41 millimetres while the case height is reduced to 8.2 millimetres, allowing the dress watch to sit more gracefully on the wrist and fit more comfortably under any cuff.
The Grand Lange 1 exemplifies, among many things, harmony in geometry and the manufactory’s continued quest for horological perfection.
The powerhouse of the new Grand Lange 1 remains the manually wound, twice-assembled 397-part calibre L095.1 – with its jewels, mirror-polished gold chatons, hand-engraved balance cock, and oscillation system on proud display under the sapphire-crystal caseback.
Unlike the Lange 1 which has a double barrel with two stacked mainsprings, the Grand Lange 1’s singular mainspring barrel affords a power reserve of 72 hours when fully wound.
Artfully designed to complement the modern gentleman’s wardrobe, the Grand Lange 1 comes in two versions: white gold with a black leather strap, and pink-gold with a red-brown leather strap. Each strap comes with a carefully polished prong buckle in matching gold.
