Omega revives an iconic timepiece and pays homage to its storied history in space exploration
Omega has brought back one of its most iconic timepieces, ‘The First OMEGA in Space,’ updated with cutting-edge technology while preserving the heritage-inspired design. The watch, originally known as the CK 2998, was first released in 1959 and became legendary when NASA astronaut Wally Schirra wore it during the Sigma 7 mission in 1962. It marked the beginning of Omega’s enduring association with space exploration.
The relaunched model maintains the classic features that endeared the CK 2998 to collectors, including a symmetrical 39.7mm case in polished-brushed stainless steel and a dark bezel with the signature tachymeter scale. Enthusiasts will recognise the “Dot Over Ninety,” a detail cherished by Speedmaster fans. Beneath the hesalite-like sapphire crystal, the watch’s grey-blue dial, reminiscent of CK 2998 models from the 1960s, is coated with CVD technology, while vintage-inspired Super-LumiNova fills the hour markers and Alpha hands.
Omega has added several nods to its history, including two vintage logos on the dial and crown, and an engraved Seahorse medallion on the caseback, which also features inscriptions celebrating its historic journey into space. However, the watch isn’t just about nostalgia; it comes equipped with the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, a modern evolution of the Calibre 321, offering high precision, performance, and magnetic resistance.
Buyers can choose from three models: two versions with either black or brown leather straps, and one with a stainless steel bracelet featuring Omega’s comfort release system.
To commemorate this launch, each watch comes in a special presentation box, accompanied by a “Legendary Moonwatch” leaflet. Omega’s reissue of “The First Omega in Space” not only pays homage to its storied past but also reinforces its commitment to innovation, ensuring that this timepiece remains a sought-after symbol of horological excellence and space exploration.
