Breitling: Day at the Races

by Pressroom

Breitling’s new Top Time Classic Cars Squad is a zippy modern-retro celebration of vintage cars.

When its classic Top Time watch first launched in 1964, Breitling captured the hearts and wrists of a younger, hipper demographic who was all for breaking traditional design codes. This modern chronograph wasn’t “your Dad’s watch” – it was a sporty, contemporary competition watch with “special dials and push buttons” and a snappy name, and it was a big hit with both young men and women of the burgeoning babyboomer era.

With its new Top Time Classic Cars Squad capsule collection, Breitling is reviving the much-loved timepiece with a huge nod to vintage American car culture – drawing inspiration from three iconic cars: the Chevrolet Corvette “Stingray”, the Ford Mustang, and the Shelby Cobra.

These distinctive chronographs stand out for their colour pop dials with orange and yellow or red and blue touches and racing-themed watch straps in calfskin leather. These bright dials are punctuated by the distinctive chronograph pushers, and old-school branding of the double-stamp logos.

The 42 mm cases of the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Mustang versions house the COSC-certified Breitling Caliber 25, a self-winding 1/8th of a second chronograph movement with a power reserve of about 42 hours. Inside the slightly smaller 40 mm Top Time Shelby Cobra beats the COSC-certified Breitling Caliber 41, a self-winding 1/4th of a second chronograph movement with a power reserve of approximately 42 hours.
