His-and-Her Louis Vuitton Accessories You Can Wear This Season.
Both creative directors at this French house were thinking about real-life dress codes when they designed their respective collections this season. Nicolas Ghesquière cast his eye on cultures and characters from past to present for womenswear, while Virgil Abloh chewed over a smorgasbord of men’s styles, in particular workwear and what constitutes as function and style for today’s savvy dresser.
At the womenswear collection, Ghesquière, known for his flair in cross-examining the antithesis of men’s and women’s fashion, married these two contrasts with an artful and seamless finish — yet again. This time, masculine motocross themes clashed charmingly with frou-frou feminine period fashions (think heavy parkas or leather jackets paired with OTT tiered petticoats), while the accessories range covered all grounds to channel equal tough-chic sass. Western-style leather boots were embellished with chains, zips and studs to convey the collection’s biker-inspired influences. There was even a flashy, brand new purse fashioned in a hardcase style and topped with a motorcycle badge-esque LV crest. So bougie!
Guys on their morning commute became Abloh’s subject of study. Be it the clothes they wore or the bags they slung over their shoulders, toted casually in hand, or strapped across the body to keep their hands free, their lifestyle needs became the considerations for the 39-year old American designer when addressing the fundamentals for his accessories drawing board.
Bags with an ergonomic design that snuggled against the curvature of the hip were the standout shape within the men’s collection. These included calf leather trunk bags with cross-body slings, as well as keepalls in tan or neon pink calf leather. Their styles were as youthful as they were unisex, and also offered a sense of timeless utilitarian chic.
Clouds and skies from Abloh’s cheery blue cloudscape set also made their way onto suits, bags and even the models’ faces. The effect was cheek and upbeat. From fluffy cloud LV initials on belt buckles to twinkle-toe crystal sneaks and an ombre sky blue Monogram canvas, the sky’s the limit on Abloh’s creative trajectory.
