Zenith Watches unveils the latest addition to its futuristic Defy Collection, The Defy Skyline, a daring feat in futuristic watch-making.
It has been a simple evolution for Zenith’s Defi of 1902, when it took a cosmic leap in terms of watch-making technology and aesthetics and became Zenith’s Defy in 1969. In 2022, the collection remains steadfast to its core unique brilliance – that of sturdiness, singularity in looks and unprecedented function.
A key element in Zenith’s story that can be traced back to its beginning is the night sky, which was a major source of inspiration for the Manufacture’s visionary founder Georges-Favre Jacot, he who didn’t just dream of, but fulfilled his desire of creating the most precise watch of the time. For his inspiration’s sake, he named his manufacture Zenith, after the point in the night sky directly above an observer.
From rugged and precise pocket-watches, to audacious spirited wristwatches, Zenith Defy’s resolutely modern outlook complements its hardy construction and reliable performance, earning it the nickname of “coffre-fort”, French for vault of safe.
When a brand and collection has its eyes on its own spectacular star inspiration, its mission never wavers. That’s why the Defy Skyline is dedicated to those over-achievers who follow their light and carve out their own journey towards their celestial dreams.
The Defy Skyline takes a leaf out of the early Defy models without merely repeating the past. Sophisticated and architectural in form, the robust Defy Skyline features cutting-edge functions that are a match for any busy metropolis lifestyle.
Fixed atop the 41mm stainless steel case, the faceted bezel has been reimagined from earlier incarnations, with twelve sides that are positioned to echo the hour markers. With an emphasis on acute performance, the screw-down crown, emblazoned with the star emblem, ensures water-resistance of 10 ATM or 100 metres.
On the small counter at 9 o’clock, a constantly running 1/10th of a second hand makes steady jumps in fixed increments, completing one revolution every 10 seconds and reminding the fastidious, evolved wearer of the fleeting nature of time and the precision of the 5Hz movement within.
Such fractional time-measuring functions were once used to calculate the movement of celestial bodies and sidereal time, also known as time measured by the apparent motion about the Earth of the distant, so-called fixed, stars, as distinguished from solar time, which corresponds to the apparent motion of the Sun.
This exceptional performance of Zenith’s Defy Skyline timepieces is delivered by the new El Primero 3620 mechanism, which is state-of-the-art in terms of accuracy and time measurement. It is also endowed with a stop-second mechanism for precise time-setting. Its automatic winding mechanism, with bi-directional rotor featuring a star motif, delivers a power reserve of approximately 60 hours.
Keeping with the purely modern palette of the Defy Skyline, the movement is finished in seamless grey and silver, with tasteful touches of blue metal.
The Defy Skyline comes in a dressy stainless steel bracelet and folding clasp, which deftly matches a starry sky pattern on its face, either in a ineffable white or sophisticated black and romantic midnight blue.
For less formal occasions, the elegant stainless steel bracelet can also be changed up for sportier looks in the form of khaki green, black or blue rubber straps.
As Zenith exists to enflame individuals “to pursue their dreams and make them come true – against all odds”, this authentically modern timepiece brand makes no distinction between what men and women can achieve. It has always celebrated both trailblazing women and men alike. Its creations – the Defy Skyline included – are therefore made for both genders, as long as they dream big and are willing to put in the work that defies the impossible.
