When it comes to your beauty, never compromise on it. Because you are worth it.
Your sleep may be the only key you have to your natural “fountain of youth”.
This seemingly innocuous five-letter word, SLEEP, has a huge role to play in your life. It affects your health, immune system, mood, concentration, memory, well-being, relationships, productivity, salary, and of course, beauty. The full works.
The sleep hormone (melatonin) is inversely related to the stress hormone (cortisol). The more stressed you are, the poorer your sleep quality. The less sleep you have (and in the presence of cortisol), your immune system is poorer, and as such, you are more prone to the flu and falling sick.
The sleep hormone also shares the same precursor (amino acid building block, tryptophan) as the happy hormone (serotonin), so if you don’t get adequate sleep, you are also unhappy and moody due to your low serotonin levels.
Sleep also regulates your appetite. The appetite hormone (ghrelin) is inversely related to sleep quality: you tend to want to eat more if you have poor sleep; this leads to unwanted weight gain, obesity, and more health issues.
During your sleep, your body repairs itself and recovers from the day’s stressors and sun exposure, this leads to a long list of benefits for your beauty:
When you lay down to sleep at night, more blood flows to the head and neck region, hence, increasing blood flow to the facial skin, allowing you to wake to a healthier glow. Without enough sleep or good quality sleep, one’s complexion can look dull or lifeless.
Eye bags/Puffy eyelids
Lack of sleep causes increased eye tearing and dark circles. With decreased immunity, you might also experience frequent colds and runny nose, which cause itchy eyes, and give rise to puffy eyelids and pigmentation around the eyes (dark circles). To reduce some morning eye swelling, many sleep experts recommend the secret “natural face-lift” method, which is to elevate your head with an extra pillow at night, sleep on your back (supine), and stay well hydrated.
When you sleep, your skin repairs itself and synthesizes new collagen, which prevents sagging. With more collagen, even as you age, your skin (especially the subdermal region) is stronger, plumper, tauter, and less likely to wrinkle. Conversely, a lack of sleep will leave the skin drier, saggier, and looking older.
A good night’s rest is important as your skin repairs the damage resulting from daytime exposure to harsh sunlight (ultraviolet) and harmful free radicals. The cells in the subdermal layer are more active in the reparative processes at night than during the day. Hence, the more you sleep, the younger you look!
It is believed that hair growth and replenishment of nutrients in the hair follicles occur mainly at night. With increased blood flow to the scalp, there is increased nourishment to the hair follicles. Hence, sleep deprivation can lead to brittle hair, damage, poor growth, and even hair loss. In addition, stress increases the stress hormone cortisol, which can also cause you to shed hair.
The Perfect Smile/Dentition
1) The longest word in the dictionary is “smiles” (see that “mile” in between the s-s);
2) That old saying: “smile more now, while you have teeth”.
Having the perfect wrinkle-free face requires the perfect smile as well. Having good quality sleep of an adequate duration also provides for healthier gums and better dentition.
The perfect smile is not just about healthy non-bleeding gums and ivory white enamels, but also about straight, well-aligned teeth. Closing one’s mouth during sleep and breathing through the nose plays an essential part in maintaining teeth alignment.
Body Beauty Aesthetics
Research has shown that good quality sleep of adequate duration and oxygen consumed during your sleep provide your body with more energy and glucose stores for sport and outdoor activities. Exercise helps keep you trim and fit, while promoting blood flow to the various organs, especially the face (for restorative processes), and releasing endorphins (the brain’s natural opioid) to help you feel good mentally, increase pleasure, and minimize pain.
There you go.
Sleep + Beauty = Beauty Sleep.
Start sleeping more (and well) to unlock the treasures of your beauty.
